Best practices

  • Keep keywords short and in capitals so they’re easy to recognise.
  • Mention any SMS charges near the code if your number is premium-rate.
  • Include the country code so the number works everywhere.
  • Test on iPhone and Android — both support SMSTO codes with message text.

Is the message sent automatically?

No. The code opens a draft; the person always taps send themselves.

Which format do you use?

SMSTO:number:message, the most widely supported SMS format for QR codes.

How long can the message be?

Up to 300 characters. Very long messages may be split into several SMS by the carrier.

Can I use it with short codes?

Yes. Enter the short code as the number, for example 56767.

Can I change the message later?

SMS codes are static; create a new code if the keyword changes.
